Summary

Jemma is a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. She completed her pupillage under the supervision of Head of Chambers, Mr Jeremy Janes in July 2024.

Before joining Chambers, Jemma previously worked for West Midlands Police for just over 3 years in a variety of staff roles including as a Professional Standards Vetting Officer, Public Protection Investigating Officer (OIC) and Volunteer Coordinator. Jemma has a wide range of experience in managing investigations especially in relation to domestic offences. As an OIC she would regularly liaise with witnesses, conduct primary investigation including interviews under caution and ultimately compile prosecution cases for CPS consideration. During her time in the professional standards department Jemma was passionate about upholding high standards within Policing to improve public perception.

Jemma commenced her studies of Law with Criminology at Birmingham City University in 2017 and continued alongside her full-time employment. During her studies, she undertook a work placement with a criminal defence firm of solicitors assisting solicitors with the case progression for a large number of clients. She drafted defence case statements, disclosure requests and regularly liaised with the Court and Prosecution effectively.

Jemma then went on to study the Barrister Professional Training Course (BPTC) at BPP Birmingham and completed her Master of Laws: “Harpers Law – What’s the point?”. She received a distinction for this work.

As a result of her studies and work experience, Jemma has a balanced and in depth understanding of evidence, the law and procedure. She enjoys both prosecution and defence work. Throughout second six of pupillage and during her early months of tenancy Jemma has represented the Crown Prosecution Service, local Council authorities and has developed positive relationships with a number of solicitors firms.
