KCH Garden Square is committed to increasing the diversity within our membership and in supporting future generations of the Bar, regardless of background or ethnicity.

Chambers & our members work closely with local Universities, Law Schools and students, regularly delivering employability and careers talks and engaging in widening participation events. We are exceptionally proud, and fully supportive, of the work of our members in relation to championing Equality & Diversity.

We acknowledge that there is inequality at the Bar as a whole and we strive to be a part of the action for change to boost diversity within the profession.

The Jeffers-Nunn Award

At the University of Leicester, Jamal Jeffers and Oliver Nunn, personally established and financed the Jeffers-Nunn Award. The annual award recipient, selected on academic merit and who is from a demographic group which is under-represented at the Bar, receives a financial award and mentorship from Jamal & Oliver to help their pursuit of a career at the Bar. The aim of the award is to provide students from groups which are under-represented at the Bar with valuable support, both financial and in terms of guidance, to help them achieve their aspirations, reach their potential and boost diversity in the profession.

Midland Circuit Social Mobility

A number of our Counsel are active members of the Midland Circuit Social Mobility group, working to improve access to a career at the bar.

Neurodiversity

KCH Garden Square is committed in continuing making the legal profession fair, equal, accepting and accessible for everyone, including aspiring barristers with neurodivergent conditions.

We are a member of Neurodiversity in Law, whose purpose is to promote and support neurodiversity within the legal professions and eliminate the stigma often associated with people who think differently. We are also a member of Neurodiversity In Business, a business forum and industry group for organisations to share good practice, as well as supporting businesses in building better workplaces for neurodivergent employees and supporting neurodivergent people to navigate independent, fulfilling careers.

Bar Futures Programme

At DeMontfort University, Jamal Jeffers launched the Bar Futures programme in which he and three other members of KCH Garden Square act as mentors to students. In addition, local Judges also provide shadowing experiences.

Much of the work received into Chambers will request a particular individual to undertake it. In the case of non-designated work, the practice development team will ensure that work is distributed in line with our Equality & Diversity Policy.
 
KCH Garden Square will not accept instructions from professional clients that are discriminatory. If a professional client refuses to withdraw a discriminatory instruction then the practice development team will report the refusal to our Equality and Diversity Officer. In these circumstances, they will always report the incident to the relevant Bar Council Committee.

Diversity Data
 
Under with the Bar Standards Board Equality & Diversity Rules of the Code of Conduct, KCH Garden Square is required to offer members of chambers workforce the opportunity to provide diversity data covering age, gender, disability, ethnic
group, religion or belief, sexual orientation, socio-economic background and caring responsibilities. An anonymised summary of data collected from individuals who volunteered responses is then required to be published every three years on chambers’ website.
