Frances is a Deputy High Court Judge (Family Division), a Crown Court Recorder; a Mental Health Tribunal Judge (Restricted Patients Panel); a Master of the Bench at Gray’s Inn and was Leader of the Midland Circuit between 2002 and 2005.
She has also been appointed to Chair the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry which will look into historical sexual abuse in care and foster homes, including the former children’s home at Haut de la Garenne.
Frances is regularly instructed in high profile and complex cases of the most serious and sensitive nature. Her practice encompasses all aspects of both serious and complex crime and child law and is described within the Legal 500 as able to straddle “criminal and family matters to great acclaim”.
Her high profile cases include the case of Karen Matthews (kidnap and false imprisonment of her nine year old daughter Shannon) and the successful defence at the Old Bailey of Rosa Driza, a Brazilian cleaner, charged with the Blackmail of two Judges.
She is well versed in modern investigative and presentational techniques, such as R2S, and has considerable experience in analysis and presentation of complex medical and scientific evidence.
