With 2023 now drawing to a close, we are reflecting on another memorable year.

We have welcomed new barristers Steph Bailey, Danielle St Clair, Jenna Allen, Rebecca Barrowcliffe and Paul Stimson, as well as Callie & Jonathan who joined the Practice Management Team.

We are proud of the number of shortlists for awards which featured throughout 2023, both for Chambers and individuals. In April we headed to the Nottinghamshire Law Society awards, where Oliver Nunn was shortlisted for the E&D Champion award. May brought the Leicestershire Law Society awards, where we were shortlisted for Chambers of the Year, Chief Operating Officer Hannah Scothern was shortlisted for the Support Staff of the Year award & Oliver Nunn won Barrister of the Year.

In June we headed up to Liverpool for a fabulous night at the very first Modern Law Private Client Awards, as Ben Chapman had been shortlisted for Rising Star of the Year.

Elsewhere, we were shortlisted for Regional Family Law Chambers of the Year by LexisNexis & ‘Highly Commended’ in the Chambers of the Year award at the Legal Business Awards. Jamal Jeffers received a Special recognition award from the Birmingham Black Lawyers and he is shortlisted for Legal Business Awards Barrister of the Year, with the ceremony taking place in January 2024. We are also delighted to be shortlisted for Chambers of the Year 2024 by The British Family Law Awards.

Across the teams, Counsel were instructed on many serious, complex and high profile matters & we even welcomed a Channel 4 film crew into Chambers for a documentary on a case which Head of Chambers Jeremy Janes had prosecuted. Counsel achievements have been recognised by the legal publications this year, with record rankings for Chambers. 16 Family & Civil Counsel were ranked in the Legal 500 & we also received Legal 500 set rankings for both Social Housing and Family: Children. A record number of family & civil rankings featured in Chambers & Partners and, for the first time, we were ranked as a Family Set by Chambers & Partners. We were also pleased to see once again the hard work and friendly & efficient service of the Practice Management Team highlighted within each of the publications.

Education remains very important at KCH Garden Square and a great deal of work goes into our comprehensive Training Programme for pupils, with particular thanks to Oliver Nunn who spearheads continual improvement on the programme in his capacity as Head of Civil & Family Pupillage.

Kinza Wahid was accepted as a tenant following completion of her pupillage in the summer & Katy, Jemma and Emma all commenced their pupillages across the teams during 2023.

January 2024 brings the opening of the Pupillage Gateway application process, in which we will be recruiting pupils across all three disciplines, starting between September 2024 and May 2025.

As we set out to do this year, we introduced career talks in schools & visited local sixth formers for careers day. In 2024, we hope to reach even more students to showcase the many opportunities available within the legal profession, as well as continuing talks to University students and both in-person & virtual mini pupillage placements.

Finally, a thank you. To our staff for their hard work over the course of the last 12 months and without whom many of our achievements would not have been possible, and to our clients for their support throughout 2023.

We wish you a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2024.
