Summary

Stephen joined Chambers after being called to the Bar at Middle Temple in October 2016. Prior to this, he was a criminal defence solicitor for 19 years, 11 of which were as a Solicitor Advocate.

Stephen is experienced across the full spectrum of criminal cases, having been involved in some of the East Midlands most high profile matters alongside a number of the more routine ones; all of which have been pursued with equal care, determination and commitment. A trait much valued by clients and Chambers alike.

Over the past decade, his practice has included many instances of defending in complex multi-handed conspiracies. From large scale importation of class A drugs to inner city gun crime, appearing both alone and as a leading junior.

Stephen was the instructing solicitor in the landmark case of Gough v Chief Constable of Derbyshire at the height of New Labour’s pursuit of “quasi-criminal” behaviour orders. This has lead to appearances as an advocate in football violence related cases over the length and breadth of England and Wales; from the “Gremlins” of Newcastle to the “Bushwhackers” of Millwall. Stephen was one of the first to appear on the Football Supporters Federation panel of preferred lawyers.

Stephen has successfully appeared in the Court of Appeal in matters as diverse as the length of sentence for Manslaughter (in which a defendant fatally administered heroin to a fellow user) to the propriety of a “declaration of relevance” in a Football Banning Order upon conviction.

In his spare time, Stephen enjoys the pain of Road Cycling and spending time with his family.
